SUMMARY:Concept Mapping
DESCRIPTION:Description:Concept maps are tools used to organize existing knowledge or to create new knowledge. Typically, a concept map has three parts: concept, proposition and learning. The concept could be one or more words; simple or complex. The proposition is a concise statement that is a link between concepts. When several concepts are arranged on a page linked by propositions they constitute a concept map. Learning occurs when there is active construction of new propositions. Concept mapping mirrors the processes of thinking and learning and provides a window into the students’ mind. Literature indicates that those who use concept maps outperform those that don’t in long term retention tests. In this session, participants will be provided evidence from literature on the usefulness of concept maps. Several examples of how concept maps have been used in this medical school will be shared and software currently available for creating concept maps will be demonstrated. \nLink back to event (URL): http://www.learncentral.org/node/19931\n
